Improving Ballot Accessibility: Addressing Auto-Fill Barriers on Vote411.org

Felicia Van EveryArticle, Video

With the general election approaching, it is important to ensure electoral resources are accessible to all registered voters. In this month’s A11y App Review, we focus on Vote411.org’s mobile site. Many voters frequently review their ballots before election day, and our accessibility consultant has evaluated the accessibility of the Vote411 ballot review features.

The Challenge:

The user must input her address to access her local ballot. However, the auto-fill option in the input field is inaccessible, preventing her from selecting her address and proceeding. Our analysis revealed that the combo box’s focus does not shift properly, which means VoiceOver cannot access the auto-fill options.

Recommended Best Practice:

For full accessibility, the code should include clearly labeled elements and ensure the focus can shift between the combo box input and the popup listbox. Proper labeling and focus management will enable the phone’s operating system to recognize and provide the correct auto-fill options, streamlining the process for the user. Here is a link to learn how this should function on a browser website.
